Skin tags or acrochordons (the medical term) are growths on the skin which are benign(noncancerous). Skin tags are commonly seen on skin folds. Neck, armpits, eyelids, under the breasts and inner thigh are the areas where skin tags usually grow.
Skin tags are virtually harmless. Sometimes because of the size and location of tags they might get painful and hence needing removal.
Are skin tags and warts the same?
Skin tags are called warts colloquially but they are not the same. Warts are growths on skin and mucosa caused by a virus called Human papilloma virus (HPV). Warts are infective and contagious.
Does having multiple skin tags a cause for concern?
Yes and No.
Yes, because overweight/obesity and diabetes mellitus have shown to contribute to increased skin tags. Acanthosis Nigricans which leads to thickening of skin over the skin folds also cause skin tags.
It is not a concern otherwise since the skin tags are harmless growths.
How can skin tags be removed?
Skin tags can be removed/excised using radiofrequency cautery and/or carbon dioxide laser. They are removed surgically if they are huge in size.
Skin tags can be removed under topical or local anaesthesia depending on its size.
Who can remove skin tags?
Dermatologist is your go to doctor for skin tag removal. The procedure is quick and easy. Consult a board-certified dermatologist to get those acrochordons removed.
Are there any home remedies to remove skin tags?
Very common remedy that people practice is tying hair around the base of the tag. The idea behind this is to stop the blood supply to the skin growth which will ultimately cause the death of the skin leading to the skin tag falling off. This procedure can lead to acute pain and secondary infection. It is advised to refrain from doing such things.
People also use some herbal preparations and acids to burn the skin tag. They can cause burns of the surrounding skin as well and leave behind pigmentation and scars.
Can skin tags lead to skin cancers?
Skin tags do not show any cancerous changes and they do not change to squamous cell carcinoma.
Is it mandatory to get skin tag removal done?
No, it is not. But tags on neck usually get snagged by jewellery worn around the neck and can lead to pain and discomfort, hence removal will help. Skin tags over groins, under surface of breast and armpits may get macerated due to constant moisture and with added friction and also get infected hence warranting removal.
Are anal skin tags same as acrochordons elsewhere on the skin?
Anal skin tag or a sentinel pile is seen in people having anal fissure. The underlying cause should be addressed. Consult a general surgeon for the same.
