The COVID-19 pandemic has got in major changes in our lifestyle and has been responsible for the suffering of many. While it is necessary to adopt these changes in the best interest of everyone, it is also important to be vigilant of the long term complications that can arise.
In this context, we are going to highlight some of the skin changes that have been observed in children during this pandemic due to various factors.
The downside of excessive screen usage : In order to compensate for the loss of academic activity due to shut down of schools, online classes are being conducted because of which children are exposed to laptop screens for unusually long time. This leads to excessive dryness of eyes, rubbing and darkening around the eyes (dark circles as we commonly call it)
So here is what can be done : keep a check on the screen time of your kids. Give a break after every 45 minutes.
Use screen protectors and adjust screen brightness
Adequate undisturbed sleep and well balanced healthy diet is of utmost importance
A good moisturiser takes care of the periorbital dryness.
Acanthosis nigricans (pigmentation and thickening of skin) : Acanthosis is pigmentation and thickening of the skin around neck, armpits, knuckles etc. A condition commonly seen in adults is nowadays seen in children due to sedentary lifestyle and faulty dietary habits (junk food with fats and sugars). All these lead to insulin resistance and obesity and the secondary skin changes.
The best way to avoid this is by engaging your children in physical activity even at home.
To cut down on processed, fried and oily foods especially those with unsaturated fats and sugars.
Healthy home made diet with lots of green leafy vegetables and fruits is highly recommended.
